ASCE - a better world by design
2002 TRENT R. DAMES AND WILLIAM W. MOORE FELLOWSHIP

Eligibility requirements:

  1. Grants are to provide for the exploration of new applications of geotechnical engineering or the earth sciences to social, economic, environmental and political issues.
  2. Applicants must be practicing engineers or earth scientists, professors or graduate students. Membership in the Society is not a requirement.
  3. Selection is based on technical and social value of the proposed research, ability of the research to advance the science and profession of engineering and to enhance the overall welfare of mankind, relevant professional experience of the applicant, and applicant=s prior contribution to the engineering profession and/or the applied earth sciences.
  4. Each recipient is required to submit a progress report six months after the commencement of the project and a final report, suitable for publication, to the Executive Director of the Society upon completion of the tenure of the fellowship.
  5. The fellowship may be awarded to co-researchers in a single project or divided among multiple projects. Previous fellowship holders are eligible to reapply.

Applications must include:

  • Completed application form. Download a PDF version of the application to print and fill out.
  • Personal essay on why the applicant should receive this fellowship. The essay shall be no more than 500 words and shall highlight why the applicant chose to become a civil engineer, specific ASCE involvement, any special financial needs, and long term goals and plans.
  • Detailed financial statement stating the purposes for which the funds are expected to be used and how they will assist the applicant.
  • Description of the proposed research and its objectives; a statement from the institution at which the research is to be conducted indicating that the applicant and proposed research are acceptable to the institution must be included.
  • Minimum of two letters of recommendation; one must be completed by a faculty member.
  • One sealed official transcript with each application.
  • One-page resumé. Include honors, activities, organizations, ASCE activities (including any offices held), and any work experience.

Procedure:

One completeapplication package containing one original of all items listed above must be postmarked by February 9, 2002. All items must be collected by the applicant and sent to ASCE Student Services as one complete application package. Application packages missing any of the above items will not be considered.

Award:

Stipend will be awarded based on funds available. Past awards have been in the $2000 - $6000 range. Award is to be used for expenses for research and experiments as stated in the eligibility requirements.
