150 years of service to the civil engineering community is a remarkable milestone for the American Society of Civil Engineers. Since its founding in 1852, members of the Society have contributed profoundly to the advancement of our nation's economic growth, general welfare, and national security. Civil engineering has enabled us to improve the quality of life not only in our great nation, but on all seven continents around the world. It is a profession in which I take great pride and satisfaction as my chosen life's work. I encourage the entire civil engineering and construction community to come together to support 2002: Building The Future.

As the new millennium dawns, the civil engineering, construction, and environmental community is contending with the challenge of accelerating the movement of innovation into practice.
