Where Does The Money Go?

ASCE Foundation A Message From The ASCE Foundation President

ASCE Foundation Fund-Raising Success Supports Civil Engineering

The most frequently asked question I receive regarding the ASCE Foundation is: "What is the Foundation doing with the money it raises?"

I think it is important that we report on both the Foundation's success in raising money and tell you where the money goes.

Perhaps, I should mention first that the mission of the ASCE Foundation is to generate resources for the civil engineering profession. With that in mind, it is important to realize that "resources" includes more than money. For example, we provide office space to civil engineering organizations at below current market rates. Also, we provide fund-raising counsel and guidance (often at no cost) to civil engineering organizations such as the ASCE Tennessee Section, the Younger Member Council of the Arizona Society of Civil Engineers, and even the ASCE Student Chapter at the University of Connecticut.

As for where the money we raise goes, since 1997, the ASCE Foundation has made grants totaling more than $2,838,000 to ASCE and the Civil Engineering Research /foundation/ These funds have supported: enhanced technical excellence of civil engineers; increased public awareness and appreciation of civil engineering; the facilitation of innovative research results being used in civil engineering practice; and, numerous other efforts to advance civil engineering.

As a fledgling organization (just six years old), the ASCE Foundation is proud of the record of accomplishments it has achieved, including the $4.6 million raised for the Building for the 21st Century campaign which supported the purchase of a new ASCE World Headquarters Building in Reston, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC.

During ASCE's annual conference in Seattle last year, the ASCE Foundation formally launched 2002: Building The Future. This capital campaign is the Foundation's commitment to helping ASCE and CERF build strong financial foundations for the future. The campaign will generate resources to ensure the success of numerous public awareness programs planned in conjunction with ASCE's 150th Anniversary and build an Innovation Fund for CERF to expedite the movement of innovation into practice for the civil engineering, construction, and environmental community worldwide. The ASCE Foundation invites all who care about the future of civil engineering to support 2002: Building The Future.

In addition, I want to mention the Foundation's Annual Appeal. The Foundation has no endowment. It receives no money from dues, publication sales, or conference registrations. It relies on the contributions received each year through the Annual Appeal to pay its basic operating expenses. So, I want to express a special thanks to our Annual Appeal donors.

Currently, the Foundation is conducting its Annual Appeal 2001. We hope that you will make a contribution to help us continue our work in generating resources for the civil engineering profession. With your help, we can truly make a difference.

Sincerely yours,
Curtis C. Deane
President
