ZOOM Into Engineering
Combining a popular PBS program's fun, kid-tested activities with the opportunity to interact with real engineers, ZOOM into Engineering allows kids grades K-5 to how engineering is important to their lives and how these exciting activities apply to things engineers do everyday. This innovative program, launched by National Engineers Week co-chairs ASCE and Dupont as EWeek's 2002 legacy program, is based on PBS's award winning ZOOM series produced by WGBH (Boston) and combines WGBH's educationaexpertise with the engineering mentors of National Engineers Week's coalition. The program was a hit at many EWeek festivities this year.
So, where does ASCE go with this terrific program now that EWeek is over? The answer is that ASCE member can continue to go into classrooms, scouting troops, and boys and girls clubs to share the excitement of engineering not only during National Engineers Week, but throughout the year. Working with engineers on the ZOOM into Engineering activities, kids explore the basic math and science concepts that are the building blocks to a strong engineering education, and a basis for the engineering knowledge that is essential to be informed citizens.
Please contact ASCE's communications department for information. Absolutely! There are two ways to bring the ZOOM into Engineering to your community. First by bringing engineers into classrooms for smaller setting "workshops," and secondly by creating a community event or bringing ZOOM into Engineering to a previously planned community event. The bright, recognizable colors of ZOOM are sure to attract a crowd of kids who may not otherwise be touched by the marvels of engineering. For more information on holding a community event with ZOOM into Engineering please contact the ASCE Washington, DC office. Now, ASCE has educational outreach programs that touch students in grades K-12.
By bringing fun, hands-on math, science and engineering activities into classrooms, ASCE members can show kids the fundamentals of the profession and what types of activities they might do each day on the job. Beyond prompting students to become civil engineers in the future, these educational outreach programs also build a basic civil engineering knowledge necessary for citizens to make informed decisions on infrastructure issues in their community and world. |
