ASCE Membership Guidelines

If you are unsure of the membership grade for which you may be most eligible, please apply for Affiliate grade; we will let you know if you might be qualified for a different grade.

  Education Requirements
Member Bachelor's degree from a school having an ABET/EAC-accredited civil engineering or related engineering program
  • Legally registered engineer or land surveyor; OR
  • Five years of responsible charge of engineering experience AND three references
  • Master's or doctorate degree in civil engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited school
  • Legally registered engineer or land surveyor; OR
  • Four years of responsible charge of engineering experience (three years with PhD) AND three references
  • Degree from a non-ABET/EAC or ABET-TEC-accredited four (or more) year curriculum in engineering, engineering technology, or related science Legally registered engineer or land surveyor AND five years of responsible charge of engineering experience
    No degree Licensure in the U.S. as a P.E. or L.S. with responsible charge for at least ten years subsequent to receiving your license AND three references from ASCE Members of Fellows
    Current member in an equivalent grade of an engineering society with which ASCE has a current reciprocal membership agreement. Copy of current membership card in engineering society (must show current grade)
    Associate
    Member
    Bachelor's degree from a school having an ABET/EAC-accredited civil engineering or related engineering program No other requirements
    Master's or doctorate degree in civil engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited school No other requirements
    Degree from a non-ABET/EAC or ABET-TEC-accredited four (or more) year curriculum in engineering, engineering technology, or related science Legally certified as an Engineer-in-Training or Land Surveyor-in-Training
    No degree Licensure in the U.S. as a P.E. or L.S. AND three references from ASCE Members of Fellows
    Current member in an equivalent grade of an engineering society with which ASCE has a current reciprocal membership agreement. Copy of current membership card in engineering society (must show current grade)
    Affiliate
    Member
    Must have an interest in advancing the purposes and objectives of ASCE and not be eligible for student grade. No other requirements
