This brochure provides paths to achieve a position in the organization of your choice and can be viewed on the ASCE Web site, www.asce.org/professional/careers/.
Membership Highlights
In order to provide more effective service, ASCE has added a new feature to the Web site. After fielding many inquiries, we compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions which merges data from all of the ASCE departments into one easy–to–use page. This new tool will assist you with issues ranging from member services, employment, conferences, Institutes, students, Sections and Branches, government relations, ASCE online and much more. For more information on this exciting new feature, visit www.asce.org/faq.
Take advantage of this special opportunity to upgrade your student member status to a full ASCE membership – and put some money into your school's ASCE Student Chapter coffers at the same time. If you upgrade your membership by June 15, 2004, you have the opportunity to contribute $10 to your Student Chapter's coffer or choose to upgrade now and pay nothing until January 1, 2005.
As a graduating student or recent graduate, you can save significantly on your dues during your first five years of membership. While regular dues are $185, you pay a discounted rate each year for five years which will increase each year until you've reached the full dues level. This means you get all of the ASCE benefits for just a fraction of what other professionals pay. This sliding-scale dues structure for graduating students allows you to enjoy the full benefits of membership at a 73% discount. Others pay $185 per year, but with this special offer you have the option to pay $50 and contribute $10 in your honor to your Student Chapter or pay nothing until January 1, 2005.
To learn more about this special offer, please visit www.ascestudentdrive.org/graduating_seniors.cfm or call 800.548.ASCE or 703.295.6300.

ASCE invites you to look ahead! Plan to participate in the 2004 Civil Engineering Conference & Exposition to CHART THE FUTURE... for the civil engineering profession, your business, and your career!
Opportunities to CHART THE FUTURE will be offered where the magnificent Chesapeake Bay reaches in to embrace the City of Baltimore ... at the Inner Harbor, one of America's most notable – and enjoyable – urban renewal sites.
Mark your calendar to join us! THE FUTURE awaits!
The Geo-Institute of ASCE inaugurated a geotechnical competition at the Southeast ASCE Student Regional Conference on March 19, 2004. The competition is the first step toward a national competition designed to foster teamwork in engineering design. Competing students design and build a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall inside a plywood box, using sand as backfill, poster paper as the wall facing, and paper strips as reinforcement. The design goals are to satisfy MSE wall construction standards in a timely fashion and sustain a 23kg. (50 lbs.) surcharge, while minimizing the amount of paper reinforcement. Details concerning rules for competition and judging can be found at http://www.ce.unlv.edu/egl/asce/. Get in on the fun! Begin planning your own MSE Wall Competition for next year. For more information contact Barbara Luke, Ph.D., P.E., Univ. of Nevada, Las Vegas at 703.895.1568 or bluke@ce.unlv.edu.
