Reston, Va.Lt. General Henry J. Hatch, P.E., Hon.M.ASCE, former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commander, was recently elected at-large director of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He will be installed on November 3, 2007 during the business meeting at ASCE’s Annual Civil Engineering Conference in Orlando, Fla.

Hatch began his career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in 1957 when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He completed assignments that included commanding the engineer battalion of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, serving as a staff officer at the Pentagon, commanding the Nashville District of the USACE and teaching at his alma mater, the United States Military Academy. In May 1988, President Ronald Reagan appointed him Chief of Engineers, commanding more than 40,000 members of the Corps and supervising programs totaling over $13 billion annually. More recently, Hatch acted as chief operating officer of ASCE until retiring in 2000.

Hatch continues to serve ASCE in a volunteer capacity on the Technical Activities Committee’s Committee on Sustainability, and previously was a member of the International Activities Committee, including three years as its chair. In 2004, Hatch was named an honorary member of the Society for his ongoing leadership in sustainable development and for sponsoring engineering expertise initiatives within the U.S. engineering community. He was awarded ASCE’s Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Lifetime Achievement Award for Government in 2006. In addition to his ASCE activities, Hatch volunteers with the American Association of Engineering Societies, the National Research Council and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1992.

Among Hatch’s military awards and decorations are two Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Awards, two Bronze Stars and three Air Medals. Hatch earned his bachelor’s degree at the United States Military Academy and his master’s degree in geodetic science at The Ohio State University. A licensed professional engineer in the District of Columbia, Hatch is a resident of Oakton, Va.

Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 140,000 civil engineers worldwide and is America’s oldest national engineering society. For more information, visit www.asce.org.
