Distinguished Member of National Civil Engineering Society

 

Reston, Va.Jared L. Cohon, Ph.D., P.E., Dist. M.ASCE, president of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, was recently named a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). ASCE’s highest accolade, distinguished membership recognizes eminence in a branch of engineering and is currently comprised of only 198 of the Society’s 146,000 members worldwide. Cohon will be formally inducted, in honor of his leadership on critical environment and energy issues and for his leadership at Carnegie Mellon University, on Oct. 29, 2009, at ASCE’s 139th Annual Civil Engineering Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

Formerly dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies from 1992 to 1997, Cohon began teaching and research in 1973 at Johns Hopkins University, where he was a faculty member in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering for 19 years.

An authority on environmental and water resource systems analysis, Cohon has worked on water resource problems in the United States, South America and Asia. In addition to his academic experience, in 1977 and 1978 Cohon served as legislative assistant for energy and the environment to the Honorable Daniel Patrick Moynihan, retired U.S. Senator-N.Y. President Bill Clinton appointed Cohon to the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board in 1995 and appointed him as chairman in 1997. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Cohon to the Homeland Security Advisory Council, and he has been reappointed by the administration of President Barack Obama.

In May 2007, Cohon was appointed to his third five-year term as the president of Carnegie Mellon University. Cohon, who was named “Pittsburgher of the Year” in 2001, is also an active ASCE member.

Cohon received his doctorate in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. A registered professional engineer in Maryland, Cohon is a resident of Pittsburgh.
