Inside this week:

Homeland Security Budget Increases While FEMA's Budget Decreases

The Department of Homeland Security gets a request of $42.7 billion, up from $40.3 enacted for FY 2006. Included is $1.7 billion for Disaster Relief (Federal Emergency Management Agency — FEMA). A decrease of $171 million over FY 2006 enacted. Among specific line items:
  • Readiness, Mitigation, Response and Recovery - $233 million, and increase of $29 million;
  • National Predisaster Mitigation Program — $149 million, a $99 million increase;
  • Flood Mitigation Assistance/National Flood Mitigation Fund - $31 million, a $11 million decrease; and
  • Public Health Program/National Disaster Medical System - $34 million, a $100 million decrease.
Other programs at DHS include the Flood Map Modernization Fund with a request of $198.9 million, a decrease of $7 million.
