Participate through links to pre-existing successful programs:
  • Participate in a "Rebuilding Together" Construction Project rehabilitating homes. This could include minor repairs to concrete, decks, stairs, sprinklers, or door lock installation.
  • Revitalize a public pool facility, including addition of a new fence and repainting.
  • Create a "Habitat for Humanity" Volunteer Day, doing such tasks as landscaping a low-income family's home.
  • Participate in a local community cleanup day that cleans and rehabilitates trails in a citypPark and at a local school.
Participate in K-12 Schools:
  • Get involved with publicizing the "Building Big" PBS Television Program in schools.
  • Organize a "Zoom into Engineering" educational program for school children.
  • Organize an engineering outreach program to introduce 4th and 5th grade school children to civil engineering and organize training sessions for participants.
  • Organize "Mathcounts" Program in schools.
  • Organize an Introduction to Engineering Program for school children.
  • Organize a toothpick bridge competition during National Engineer's Week.
  • Participate in West Point Bridge Design Contest and sponsor prizes for the contest.
Participate with College Students/ Younger Engineers:
  • Support or judge a regional competition of ASCE's National Concrete Canoe Competition for College Student Chapter's.
  • Organize a Minority Affairs Scholarship Program.
  • Organize a PE Refresher Course.
  • Establish mentoring programs with college students and younger engineers.
Get involved with your community:
  • Design and construct a town's skate park.
  • Set up an engineering exhibit at a local shopping mall.
  • Organize a fun engineering activity day at a local children's museum.
  • Participate in a "Toys for Tots" toy drive.
  • Participate in a "Christmas in April" charitable donation program.
  • Organize a "Boo at the Zoo" volunteer effort helping distribute candy in costume and organize games for children at a local zoo.
Help the underprivileged:
  • Coordinate a winter coat or clothing drive that distributes clothing to the underprivileged.
  • Organize an "Adopt-a-YMCA" project in underprivileged areas.
  • Volunteer time to help out at a local food bank.
  • Visit a homeless shelter once a month to cook and serve food.
  • Organize a volunteer day for a senior center.
  • Visits homebound seniors through a county senior community services organization.
  • Visit and provides companionship to Hospice patients.
Help the environment:
  • Help maintain a community garden.
  • Volunteer to get involved with a local park organization, raising funds and awareness of the value of parks, protecting our environmentally sensitive areas, and preserving open space in the community.
  • Organize an "Adopt-a-Stream" or "Adopt-a-Highway" project.
  • Participate in a restoration project of a local historical site.
  • Support a local Boy Scout/ Girl Scout group by helping to maintain and make improvements to their park and campsites.
Extreme Ideas:
  • Organize and help fund a local PBS Television Program like the program, "Harbor History", that details history of engineering and construction of a city harbor. Answer telephone lines during the airing of the program and during the pledge drive.
  • Get involved with the Corazon Program, a program that provides poor people in Tijuana, Mexico, with simple structure homes to help them earn their way out of poverty. Also introduced "Building Big" and "Zoom into Engineering" to the children of the Corazon project.
  • Protect a California "Brine Line", preserving local river water quality.
  • Participate in restoration project of a major historical site, like the USS Missouri.
