2006 Structures Congress Diversity Breakfast
"Broadening Participation: Asset Management and Capacity Building" ASCE Member Neville A. Parker, Ph.D., P.E. was selected by the Committee on Diversity and Women in Civil Engineering to discuss critical issues on diversity within the civil engineering profession. In his lecture, Parker advanced ideas and recommendations for harnessing, nurturing and projecting the effective participation of women and professionals from underrepresented groups, a largely untapped human resource. CDWCE Member Hosts GIRL ENGINEERING DAY!
On February 9, 2006, ASCE Broward County Branch joined female representatives from CDM and Carter & Burgess, Inc. to promote GIRL ENGINEERING DAY where fifteen girls from the Plantation High School Magnet Program traveled to CDM to learn more about careers in engineering. CDWCE Member Brandy Creed represented ASCE and discussed the various branches of civil engineering, PE examinations, the work and salaries of engineers, the college experience, and the importance of joining professional organizations such as ASCE.





ASCE Member Represents CDWCE at Historic Event Honoring African American Slaves ASCE's Committee on Diversity and Women in Civil Engineering (CDWCE) awarded a plaque of recognition to the Slave Descendants Freedom Society at the Freedom Symposium 2006 on August 3, 2006 in Portsmouth, VA. The plaque was presented to Freedom Society co-founders Eric and Lisa Sheppard by ASCE member Christina Ammens, E.I.T., Norfolk Branch, in honor of the enslaved and freed African-Americans who hand-dug the Dismal Swamp Canal more than 200 years ago. Extraordinary Women Engineers Project - Highlight of WEPAN Conference
The Extraordinary Women Engineers 2005 Assessment Report was highlighted as a groundbreaking resource during the 2006 Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network (WEPAN) Conference. The report was also the focal point of the outreach and collaboration session But, Engineering IS Cool - Effective Messaging for Pre-College Students led by University of Texas/Austin graduate Katie Kizziar. Kizziar engaged participants in group discussions on the effective promotion of engineering education and the profession.


CDWCE member James H. Johnson, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., DEE was one of four leaders included in WEPAN's first corporate track panel session Collaboration: None of Us are as Effective as Many of Us. Johnson and leaders from IBM, Hewlett-Packard, the University of Colorado, and Purdue University engaged audience members in roundtable discussions on how to leverage industry and collegiate expertise to develop effective gender equity collaborations in STEM education and the engineering profession.

ASCE Celebrates with NSBE!

In support of ASCE's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), ASCE was a proud participant in NSBE's 2006 Annual Convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.



Executive Director, Patrick J Natale co-presented the Distinguished Engineering of the Year Award to past ASCE President Delon Hampton. CDWCE Corresponding Member Kim Parker Brown was presented with the Woman in Technology Award.
CDWCE Corresponding Member Dwayne James mentors students on careers in civil engineering.
 
Executive Director, Patrick J. Natale greets hospitality suite partners from CDM  
ASCE sponsored the Civil Engineering Hospitality Suite for students interested in the civil engineering profession, as well as alumni and seasoned professionals. Co-sponsors included Bechtel, CDM, HDR, and M. A. Mortenson Company. Representatives networked with practicing civil engineers and advised students in a 20-minute Q&A session.
