2001 ASCE Summer Institutes Criteria

1. Duration of institute: Institutes lasting two weeks will receive a higher rating than those of other duration.

2. Target population: Institutes directed toward rising sophomores and juniors will receive a higher rating than those directed toward rising seniors.

3. Demonstrated ability to successfully host an institute.

4. Quality and content of the proposed institute program.

5. Support from the host institution.

6. Support from ASCE section and branch.

7. Ability of proposed program to meet these minimum objectives:

  1. Introduce students to the broad spectrum of engineering.
  2. Demonstrate the significance to society of an engineer's work.
  3. Provide students with an opportunity to experience the ingenuity, creativity, and challenge of engineering.
  4. Allow students to interact with both engineering faculty and practicing engineers.
  5. Introduce students to the process of solving engineering problems using math, science, and computers.
  6. Make students aware of the academic skills needed to pursue a career in engineering, what is involved in the college application process, and the availability of financial aid.
8. Location: Institutes located in areas with concentrations of targeted groups will receive a higher rating.

9. Creativity of program: Institutes providing a diverse mix of engineering activities will receive a higher rating than those offering the traditional summer school approach.

10. Focus on civil engineering: Institutes stressing civil engineering will receive a higher rating.

11. Timeliness of proposal submittal: Proposals submitted by the deadline will receive a higher rating.
