The increasing complexity and interconnectedness of civil and other infrastructure systems such as transportation, water and wastewater conveyance, electric power, energy, telecommunications and cyber-infrastructure have introduced new vulnerabilities to those infrastructures as well as new risks to society. Most of these critical infrastructures have rigid operating parameters and can be vulnerable to unforeseen natural and technological disasters. The need to maintain efficient functioning of the system and to explore the system at some “equilibrium” state is very important to planners, designers, engineers and decision makers. Resilience engineering is emerging as a new framework for thinking about safety and anticipating the changing potential for unserviceability or failure. Resilience engineering is therefore different from traditional risk analysis.  A “system of systems” engineering perspective is needed to adequately develop, model and interpret the resilient systems. Such a perspective, possibly codified as a framework, will facilitate understanding and interpretation of resiliency in individual, coupled and multiple systems.


The objective of the mini-symposium on Resilience Engineering is to present a rigorous approach for studying this new emerging area and to demonstrate how researchers from various disciplines are addressing this emerging research area. The area of interest is the critical infrastructure protection which includes energy and power systems.
This mini-symposium will focus on the development and modeling of various resilient systems, safety-critical systems, methods for designing resilient systems, metrics for resiliency, the connection between resiliency and sustainability and case studies. The underlying methodologies anticipated include but are not limited to, graph theory and networks, risk analysis, extreme event theory, operational risk, fault tree analysis, computational intelligence and probabilistic reasoning. Contributions from engineers, social scientists and insurance industry are welcome.
1. Invited plenary and survey papers, each giving a representative overview of a problem area with case studies [45 minutes];
2. Submitted papers within the scope of the symposium [25 to 30 minutes];
3. Poster session within the scope of the symposium;
4. Discussion sessions on selected important topics of general interest; and
5. Tutorials on selected topics.
6. Identification of research needs


Selected papers will appear in a Monograph - to be published by ASCE.
