A Message from Stan R. Caldwell, P.E., SECB, F.AEI, F.SEI, F.ASCE, Chair, SEI Futures Fund Board of Directors
I would like to provide an update on the SEI Futures Fund (the “Fund”).
The SEI Futures Fund was established by SEI in 2013 as the successor to the SEI Endowment Fund, which SEI established in 2003. The purpose of the Fund is to invest in the future of our profession by funding a broad range of activities which advance the art, science and practice of structural engineering. Because these activities fall outside the annual operating budget of SEI, without ongoing financial support from the Fund these activities might not be possible.
The Fund is managed by a five-person Board of Directors (the “Board”). The Board has established four strategic areas for funding:
- Promote student interest in structural engineering
- Support younger member involvement in SEI
- Provide opportunities for professional development
- Invest in the future of the structural engineering profession
Using these strategic areas as a template, the Board has approved funding for the following specific activities in 2014:
The amount of funding approved for 2014 by the SEI Futures Fund is more than five times the total amount of funding approved by the SEI Endowment Fund over the past decade, yet it does not exceed expected 2013 earnings. For some of us, the real excitement lies ahead in the fourth strategic area … investing in the future of the profession. An SEI task committee recently completed a two-year study of the future of the structural engineering profession. Review the SEI strategic vision and their report: “A Vision for the Future of Structural Engineering and Structural Engineers: A Case for Change”. Basically, the report concludes that successful structural engineers must emerge in the future as leaders and/or innovators. The report recommends ten specific initiatives for possible SEI action. As SEI moves forward with some of these initiatives, it is expected that significant financial support will be provided by the Fund.
SEI has the potential to bring tremendous benefits to you and to our profession with financial support from the Fund. With your help, the activities and initiatives supported by the Fund will become increasingly significant over time. Please join me in building the Fund. Your contribution, along with that of your colleagues, will allow robust financial support for all of the strategic areas outlined above. After your family, your religion, and your health, nothing should be more important to you than your profession. Therefore, please consider giving generously. All contributions will be sincerely appreciated and gratefully acknowledged.
SEI is a part of ASCE, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. The SEI Futures Fund is partnering with the ASCE Foundation, also a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, to leverage their expertise in managing philanthropic gifts. Gifts can be made via check to: SEI Futures Fund, c/o ASCE Foundation, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, Virginia, 20191.
