Professor Mertz is the Director of the Center for Innovative Bridge Engineering at the University of Delaware. His scholarly work centers on the development and refinement of design and evaluation methodologies for bridges and other transportation structures. Professor Mertz is the founding editor of the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering. Prior to his appointment at the University, Professor Mertz was an Associate of the bridge-engineering firm of Modjeski and Masters. While at M&M, he was the co-principal investigator of the research project that created the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. All of Professor Mertz’s formal civil-engineering education is from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
