Dr. Finley A. Charney received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Texas ant Austin, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He has 21 years of experience as a practicing engineer, and 13 years of experience as a full-time academician. Currently, he is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech, located in Blacksburg Virginia. He also serves as President of Advanced Structural Concepts, Inc., also located in Blacksburg. As a practicing engineer Dr. Charney contributed to the analysis and design of a number of important structures, including the 40-story Metropolitan Life office building in St. Louis, and Safeco Field, the home of the Seattle Mariners. As a researcher, he has led numerous projects in the area of seismic resistant design and structural analysis, cumulating in more than 85 technical papers. He has developed numerous continuing education seminars, and accumulated more than 1000 hours teaching these courses. He is long time member of ASCE, SEI, and the Earthquake Engineering Institute, and is an active participant in a number of technical and building code committees. He is a registered professional engineer in the states of Texas and Colorado.
