Jim is the Managing Director of the Engineering Programs Division of ASCE which encompasses the Society’s eight Institutes, thirteen technical divisions and councils, the codes and standards program, the three certification academies, and the Committee on Critical Infrastructure. He served as the Director for the Structural Engineering Institute from its founding in 1997 through March of 2011.
Jim has been with ASCE for 19 years and, in addition to his other duties, served as the secretary to the ASCE 7 standards committee on Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures. In 2001, Jim organized and staffed the two Building Performance Study Teams which examined the Pentagon and the World Trade Center Complex in the aftermath of the attacks on September 11th.
He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and is a licensed professional engineer. Married for over 20 years, he has two amazing children, Chris (14) and Jenny (17).
