John Hooper, P.E., S.E., is a Senior Principal and the Director of Earthquake Engineering at Magnusson Klemencic Associates, an award-winning structural and civil engineering firm headquartered in Seattle, Washington. He received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Seattle University in 1981 and a Master of Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1984. John has over 30 years of structural engineering experience, with a focus on seismic engineering and structural analysis. He is a key member of the ASCE 7 Main Committee, Chair of the ASCE 7 Seismic Subcommittee, member of the AISC’s Committee on Specifications and Task Committee 9 for Seismic Design, and one of fifteen Federally-appointed members of the Advisory Committee on Earthquake Hazard Reduction (ACEHR), charged with oversight of the earthquake management and implementation activities of the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program and its related Federal agencies (FEMA, NIST, NSF, and USGS). Among John’s more than 25 papers and presentations are seminars on the seismic design using ASCE 7 and performance-based seismic design issues. Through both his project and technical committee leadership, John contributes greatly to industry advancements and research, specifically in developing the next generation of performance-based design methodologies and advancing code-prescriptive seismic design approaches.
