John L. Carrato, PE, SE began his professional career in 1980 at Alfred Benesch & Company (Benesch), after earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a structural engineer, he specializes in the design, inspection and evaluation of railroad bridges, and has managed a number of complex transportation projects. His innovative design work and has been recognized time and again through dozens of project and individual awards. John has been long committed to the engineering profession, and has applied his technical expertise to the advancement of industry practices through participation in professional organizations. He is actively involved in several groups including ACEC, ACI, AREMA, ASCE and SEI. Within SEI, he has served as the Co-Chair for the 2012 Structures Congress, Past Chair of Technical Activities Division Executive Committee and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Futures Fund.
