Jon is Chairman/CEO of the international engineering firm Magnusson Klemencic Associates (MKA). The firm, headquartered in Seattle (offices in Chicago, Shanghai, and Riyadh), has completed projects in 47 states and 48 countries.
He received his BSCE from the University of Washington and his MSCE from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined MKA (then Skilling Helle Christiansen Robertson) in 1976.
Jon has served as the firm’s CEO for 24 years and has been the Structural Engineer Principal-in-Charge for more than $5.5 billion worth of projects. Convention centers, major sports facilities, cultural projects, hospitals, long-span structures, and high-rise buildings are the specialties of his practice.
A 35-year member of ASCE, Jon has attended the Structures Congress 22 times and served on the SEI Board of Governors (1999-2003).
Jon has given more than 230 invited engineering presentations to groups ranging from technical university-level lectures to “lay” audiences such as Rotary clubs. He has given more than 100 media interviews covering engineering topics - including ABC Evening News with Peter Jennings, Discovery Channel, BBC, NPR, History Channel, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Good Morning America, NBC News, CBS News with Dan Rather. His work as an author includes more than 30 papers and publications.
Professional recognition includes: Fellow in the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Honorary Member of the American Institute of Architects, ASCE Ernest E. Howard Award, Distinguished Member of ASCE, and the AISC Designer Lifetime Achievement Award.
