Sam Rihani of Reston, Virginia, is current President of the Structural Engineering Institute and Principal of REI Structural Consultants.
During his 35-year professional career, Rihani has specialized in the structural analysis and design of steel framing systems and buildings, and acted as the lead structural engineer on more than 700 projects including numerous industrial, commercial, educational, and institutional buildings. He has developed specialized structural analysis and design software for bracing systems, base plates, and crane beams. He is a licensed professional engineer in 11 states, and is a Fellow member of ASCE.
Rihani has been an active member of ASCE since 1975. He has served as Vice-President and then President of ASCE-Saudi Arabia Section from 1986 to 1988. From 2003 to the present, he has been a member of the SEI Professional Activities Committee which is spearheading the effort of securing legislation for a structural engineering licensure (SE) in all U.S. jurisdictions, and chaired this committee from 2006 to 2010. He served on the Executive Committee of the SEI Business and Professional Activities Division from 2008 to 2011. Currently he serves as a member of the ASCE Technical Region Board of Governors. Rihani was also President of the Structural Engineering Association of Metropolitan Washington (DC) from 2007 to 2008.
Rihani is a 1977 graduate of Oregon State University with a BS in civil engineering. He earned his MSCE with an emphasis in structural engineering from the University of Maryland.
