New Leadership Forum To Advise ASCE in Facing Broad Civil Engineering Challenges ASCE has announced the establishment of the Civil Engineering Forum for Innovation (CEFI), created in January 2006 by the ASCE Board of Direction. Expanding on the mission of the former Civil Engineering Research Foundation's (CERF) Corporate Advisory Board (CAB), the new Forum will bring together leaders from industry, academia and government to define realistic options and progressive strategies to strengthen the profession and industry through technical innovation and public policy. ASCE believes that through this Forum, senior leaders within industry will become closely engaged in strategic actions on behalf of ASCE's mission.
The group's first task will be to proactively encourage innovation to renew the nation's decaying infrastructure. CEFI will begin by developing a strategic roadmap to rebuild infrastructure with emphasis on advancing adoption of technology, improving project performance, and increasing industry productivity in partnership with government entities. The Forum will seek support from public policymakers and technology leaders. CEFI will begin this work at its first Infrastructure Solutions Summit, April 25-26th, in Washington, DC. "This new Forum will take a hard look at how innovation can help us effectively tackle the challenges of our mission, including finding ways to improve the nation's decaying infrastructure," said Dennis Martenson, P.E., DEE, F.ASCE, president of ASCE. "America's infrastructure crisis is widespread and well documented, with a price tag of $1.6 trillion over five years, according to data reflected in ASCE's Report Card for America's Infrastructure." "These industry leaders can contribute so much to our work and help us make successful forward strides to improve our infrastructure and thereby support jobs, transportation, and environmental and economic advances," said Ed Richardson, P.E., M.ASCE, chairman of the Board of CEFI, and senior vice president and manager of engineering for Bechtel Corporation. "ASCE believes our profession shares common goals with American citizens - to achieve a better way of life and find innovative ways to sustain quality living and a strong economy." "Innovative private and public sector leaders sharply focused on advancing technology, project performance and industry productivity can make great progress toward turning around the state of America's infrastructure. The first 'innovative' task for the leaders of our fragmented industry is to unite, shape the roadmap and take the first step in a very purposeful marathon," said Joseph A. "Bud" Ahearn, P.E. M.ASCE, vice chairman of CH2M HILL Companies, Ltd., chairman of CEFI's Industry Leaders Council, and former CAB chairman. America depends on the work of civil engineers to provide a high standard of living and maintain our competitive place in the world. The summit will examine various aspects of innovation in design, construction, operations and other areas, and then develop a blueprint for actions to renew and manage infrastructure through innovation. It will consider: the role of the private sector in national infrastructure solutions; existing barriers to innovation; the importance of a national infrastructure agenda; and a range of public policy issues. Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 139,000 members worldwide and is America's oldest national engineering society. In March 2005, ASCE released its 2005 Report Card for America's Infrastructure with updated grades in 15 categories. For more information, visit www.asce.org/reportcard/. |
