ASCE - a better world by design
Technical Council on Lifelines Earthquake Engineering

The Earthquake Investigation Committee of the Technical Council on Lifelines Earthquake Engineering (TCLEE) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was established to initiate, organize, train for, coordinate and evaluate the performance of lifelines following earthquakes. ASCE normally published the results of these investigations for purchase by the ASCE membership and the general public. However, for this investigation these documents have been made available for free. There are currently four reports as part of this investigation: Sumatra-Andaman Islands; India; Thailand; and Sri Lanka. All the reports with the exception of Sri Lanka are available for downloading. The Sri Lanka report will follow shortly. In all cases, these reports are still in the process of final review/editing and are being considered as "live" documents. When all the reports have been made available and all outstanding technical issues have been resolved it will be published by ASCE as a hard copy final report available for purchase.

The earthquake of December 26, 2004 initiated a tsunami that impacted coastal areas within the region. Because of the size of the area affected and of the damage to harbors, and beach front communities due directly to the tsunami the investigation team was expanded to include members on ASCE Institutes (Coastal Oceans Ports and River Institute (COPRI) and Environmental Water Resources Institute (EWRI), the Institution of Civil Engineers (U.K.), India Institute of Technology(IIT) of Chennai and several non-engineering society organization such as ABS Consulting, Klohn Crippen, and the Chulalongkorn University. ASCE would like to acknowledge these members for their efforts as part of the field team as well as contributing authors to the documents.
