Purpose and Background
High-rise steel structures represent the ultimate achievement of the structural engineering profession. Many design professionals are interested in discovering how these magnificent structures work and what makes them different from other buildings. Specialized engineering firms, who have accumulated significant expertise in this area and can draw on much previous experience with high-rise issues, typically design tall buildings. The available engineering literature on this subject is written with these specialists in mind and is filled with complex discussions and technical analysis topics.
The purpose of this web seminar is to open this area to the average engineer and provide a practical overview of the issues involved in the design of tall buildings. The presentation starts with a summary of the main topics pertaining to the design of high-rise structures, outlining the typical steel framing and foundation systems. The effects of wind and seismic loads on tall buildings typically greatly exceed those on low and midrise buildings. Accordingly, much of the design differences are in the framing of their Lateral-Force-Resisting Systems (LFRS). The webinar includes a great deal of discussion on these systems and to the case studies illustrating various approaches.
Some other issues that make the design of high-rise buildings challenging include temperature movements, elastic column shortening, fire-protection, and egress. These topics are covered in the presentation as well.
