An Introduction to Roadside Delineation and Safety Systems
This seminar will focus on how roadsides, especially in rural areas, should be delineated to prevent drivers from leaving the roadway. The use of edge lines, delineators, chevron signs and object markers will be addressed. The second half of the presentation will concentrate on safety systems aimed at reducing the severity of crashes once the road user has left the roadway. Shoulder and centerline grooving, guard rails/ median barriers and their end treatments, runaway truck escape ramps will be discussed. The importance of providing clear zones and breakaway devices will also be discussed. The seminar is co-sponsored by ASCE's Transportation & Development Institute and ASCE Continuing Education.
