A new approach to engineering research on smart cities is here!

Andrew Smyth, Ph.D., F.EMI, M.ASCE, Robert A.W. and Christine S. Carleton Professor of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Director and PI, NSF Engineering Research Center for Smart Streetscapes, Columbia University leads a team to develop a $26M NSF-funded Engineering Research Center that takes a new approach to  engineering research on smart cities. The collaboration with @CUSEAS, @FloridaAtlantic, @lehmancollege, @UCF and @rutgersSOE will focus on making cities more livable, safe, and inclusive.

The underlying technologies of the new NSF Engineering Research Center for Smart Streetscapes (CS3) will integrate advances in wireless/optical communications, edge/cloud computing, situational awareness, and privacy and security. Critical to its approach, CS3 will balance public data collection with community-defined benefits.

CS3 researchers will work collaboratively with a diverse cohort of 80+ community stakeholders, industry partners, community organizations, municipalities, and K-12 schools.
