Project Excellence Award Winners Announced
The 2015 COPRI
Project Excellence Award
winners are Small Project : Makah Tribe Commercial Dock Replacement, submitted by BergerABAM; and Large Project : Port of Newport International Terminal Renovation, submitted by GRI. Congratulations to our awardees!
The Makah Tribe Commercial Dock Replacement is located in a remote area on the Washington coast, across from Vancouver Island B.C (
Working in remote locations always requires enhanced engineering and construction ingenuity to achieve optimum results.
The Makah Dock Team met this challenge head-on and was able to expedite a complicated project encumbered with formidable permitting requirements that resulted in design and completion of construction within a 13 month window.
The creativity that was brought to the project by the engineering and construction entities was a special benefit to the local Indian Tribal Community, because 50% of the community's economy is derived from ocean resources. The pier is fundamental to tribal fishing activity.
The Newport International Terminal Team is responsible for a marvelous design and construction project (
)! The phrase "out-of-the-box thinking" is certainly applicable here.
The project involved removal of one World War II-era reinforced concrete ship (intentionally sunk in-place and used as a dock) and incorporation of another ship into a permanent wharf structure.
The project brought together diverse requirements such as:
- Development of community support
- Environmental cleanup
- Protection of marine habitat
- Schedule limitations
- Design and construction flexibility; and
- Work within a limited budget
This is a one-of-a-kind project is evidence of the application of engineering creativity to solve problems and enhance public infrastructure.
