The COPRI Waterways Committee and the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering have issued a call for papers for a Special Collection on Case Studies in Waterway Engineering.

Waterways all over the world are experiencing increased cargo loads, and this has led to a large body of engineering and research work to expand the waterways to accommodate increased numbers and sizes of vessels. Recent examples of these waterway expansion (widening and deepening) include Mississippi River, Houston-Galveston, Savannah, Rotterdam, Miami, Columbia River, and others. Earlier examples include the Missouri River and Tenn-Tom Waterway shallow draft channels.

The goal of this special collection is to document best practices in waterways engineering for navigation improvements. These case studies should focus on the engineering and scientific aspects of waterway expansion and, most particularly, the lessons learned. Topics of interest include successful holistic solutions for issues such as:

  • Hydrodynamics, such as adverse currents, waves, and seiching
  • Water quality, such as dissolved oxygen, nutrients, salinity, and temperature
  • Environmental effects and mitigation measures
  • Channel and off-channel sedimentation, including maintenance dredging
  • Channel design for navigation safety and economy
  • Structures, including locks, training dikes, and jetties

Submission Information

Prospective authors are requested to submit one-page summaries to not later than August 1, 2020.

The editors will select from submitted summaries those for which complete papers will be requested. The selection process will consider the Aims and Scope, given above, plus geographical and topical distribution. Complete papers will be submitted as manuscripts to the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering. Submission of a manuscript for the special issue does not guarantee publication. Manuscripts will be subject to the same peer-review process and editorial approval as all manuscripts published in the Journal.
