Dr. Steven A. Hughes Awarded the 2020 2020 John G. Moffatt-Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award

Please join COPRI in congratulating Steven A. Hughes, Ph.D., P.E., D.CE, M.ASCE as the recipient of the 2020 John G. Moffatt-Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award.

 

The John G. Moffatt-Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award is given to a member of ASCE who has made a definitive contribution to the field of harbor and coastal engineering, and serves to recognize new ideas to expand the engineering or construction techniques available for harbor and coastal projects.

 

Dr. Hughes is recognized for "his numerous significant achievements and contributions to the coastal engineering profession throughout a most distinguished and dedicated career."

 

Dr. Hughes has devoted over 47 years to the engineering profession, primarily in the discipline of coastal engineering and associated applications. He is a recognized subject matter expert in the areas of coastal protection, coastal inlets, wave and wave theory, levee overtopping and physical modeling of associated topics. He has been the consummate public servant as a research engineer, applications engineer and educator. He is considered a top tier coastal engineer and scientist throughout the international engineering community.

 

Dr. Hughes has attained numerous accolades throughout his esteemed career. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Mississippi and Colorado as well as a Diplomate of Coastal Engineering. He is a 4-time recipient of the Engineering Research Development Center (ERDC} Commander and Director's Research Achievement Award, the ERDC Commander's Award for Civilian Service, and the Corps of Engineers Bronze Order of the de Fluery Medal. In 2017, Steve was inducted into the Waterways Experiment Station Gallery of Distinguished Employees, one of the highest and rarest honors bestowed to the exceptional few in the Corps of Engineers research community.

 

Throughout his career, Dr. Hughes has been fully engaged in giving back to the American Society of Civil Engineers and the coastal engineering profession. He has served on numerous thesis and doctoral advisory committees at Texas A&M, Miami, California­Berkeley and Mississippi State Universities. Steve has taught several short courses related to coastal engineering. He has served as a peer reviewer for the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) J. of Waterway, Ports, Coastal and Ocean Engineering for over 25 years as well as several international coastal oriented journals. He served on the editorial board of Coastal Engineering (Elsevier). Steve was presented the ASCE 2018 Outstanding Reviewer Award for the J. of Waterway, Ports, Coastal and Ocean Engineering. Steve chaired the Coastal Engineering Technical Committee and the COASTAL ENGINEERING PRACTICE '92 Conference. In recent years, he has served as a review panelist for the National Science Foundation.
