The Maurice A. Biot Lecture was established at Columbia University in 2004 in remembrance of the late Professor Maurice Anthony Biot and his renowned achievements as an engineer, physicist, and applied mathematician.
Maurice A. Biot was a professor of mechanics at Columbia University from 1937-1945. Biot published a number of scientific papers that lay the foundations of the theory of poroelasticity (now known as Biot theory), which describes the mechanical behavior of fluid-saturated porous media.
The Biot Lecture is given each fall at Columbia University and is a joint effort of the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics of Columbia University, the Engineering Mechanics Committee of the ASCE Met Section, and the Engineering Mechanics Institute of ASCE (EMI).
