Prof. Pol Spanos
EMI President

Serving on the EMI Board of Governors for the last two years, with George Deodatis as President, has been a unique privilege and honor.  In these two years, EMI has done exceptionally well, both nationally and internationally.  I am excited to lead an extremely healthy and vibrant organization with impressive accomplishments and growth, as it is evident from the EMI Annual Reports to the EMI membership. I sincerely hope that I will be able to continue in the same trajectory by relying on the indispensable support of the members of the EMI Board of Governors, the EMI staff, and all the members of EMI.

I look forward to an exciting program of activities this year, including:

The EMI 2020 Conference at Columbia University will be held together with the PMC 2020 Probabilistic Mechanics and Reliability Conference. It will be an occasion for hopefully seminal technical discussions, and to visit or discover New York City, the Columbia campus, and the historic Plaza Hotel where the Awards Banquet will be held.

The EMI 2020 International Conference at Durham University in Durham, U.K., which will be an occasion to, inter alia, strengthen/initiate international collaborations, and visit the Durham Castle and St James Park in Newcastle.

I would like to note that in recent years, EMI made great strides in eliminating conflicts of interests, and seeking holistic optimality in its functions and operations. In the coming year, our focus will be on further streamlining Board operations, safeguarding transparency, increasing efforts to attract industry participation, enhancing the webinars offerings, and fostering mentorship program to assist junior faculty in engineering mechanics. All of these objectives with be pursued with overwhelming fairness, and resolute commitment to gender/geographical/racial/thematic diversity.

I invite you to stay engaged in EMI activities, and to take advantage of the plethora of opportunities that EMI has to offer. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions.

With heartfelt wishes,
