John Cleary, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE is pleased to join the Board of Governors of the Structural Engineering Institute (representing SEI Local Activities effective October 1 for a four-year term). He has been a faculty member at the University of South Alabama since 2012. After graduating with his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in 2006 and 2007 from Cleveland State University he went on to earn a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 2011. John's master's research focused on concrete properties and his doctoral research focused on the instrumentation and testing of bridge structures. While completing his Ph.D. at Case, John started his career as a faculty member at Western Illinois University where he worked for two years before moving to the University of South Alabama where he is currently an Associate Professor.

John's current research focuses on several areas including structural performance and behavior during storm events, load behavior of bridges subjected to wave loading, evaluation of construction vibrations, and LRFD calibration of deep foundations. From a teaching perspective, he teaches a wide variety of materials, mechanics, and design courses. Courses taught include statics, mechanics of materials, dynamics, structural analysis, steel design, advanced steel design, concrete design, timber design, and finite element analysis, just to name a few. In addition to his teaching and research, John also works as a consulting engineer designing steel and timber structures, analyzing and designing foundations, providing forensic analysis services, and conducting forensic investigations.

John's involvement with ASCE and SEI started in college where he was the Graduate Advisor for Case's ASCE Student Chapter. After staring at Western Illinois University, John became the Chair of the Quad Cities SEI Branch. When he moved to Mobile, AL, he founded the SEI Mobile Branch and eventually became the President of the ASCE Mobile Branch. Currently, he is a past chair of the SEI Local Activities Division (LAD) Executive Committee, Chair of the Student Initiatives Committee, and chair of the SEI LAD Outreach Committee, among other commitments.

For John, being involved in leadership roles with SEI has been an amazing experience and opportunity to learn, grow, advance, and give back to the future of the profession. He is honored and humbled to be elected to the SEI Board of Governors and looks forward to the opportunity to work with the other board members and the membership to advance the practice of structural engineering, elevate that status of structural engineering, and foster the development of the next generation of structural engineers.

Outside of engineering, John spends time with his wife and two daughters. Enjoys spending time outside fishing with his girls, playing at the park with his girls, going to the pier with his girls, really anything with the ladies. He also catches a football game when he can.
