Shuxian (Susanne) Wassenius, P.E. is a structural engineer with 19 years of structural engineering building experience. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees from the University of Maryland College Park. Susanne is the President/Owner of Spyder Engineers, LLC, a structural engineering firm located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Susanne has been actively involved in the Structural Engineering Institute Maryland Chapter (SEI-MD) for the past 9 years. Her roles for SEI-MD had been Activity Coordinator, Treasurer, Vice-Chair, Chair and now Past Chair. During her last year as the Chair of SEI-MD (2017), she decided to get involved with SEI Local Activities Division Executive Committee (LAD EXCOM). Her roles for LAD EXCOM have been Secretary, Vice-Chair, and now Chair.

Susanne initially got involved with SEI because she wanted to be more active in the structural engineering community. As she got more involved, which included attending events such as the Local Leadership Conference (LLC) and Structural Congress, she finds herself loving the structural engineering profession even more! Being around like-minded professionals who share the same passion as she does, has greatly enhanced her overall experience. Her SEI involvement has not only enriched her technical knowledge but also deepened her devotion to the structural engineering profession.  She wants to contribute to making the profession even better.

While Susanne was actively involved in SEI-MD, she has experienced first-hand the local chapter challenges. As the Chair of LAD EXCOM, she would like to continue to devote LAD EXCOM's attention to supplementing the local chapters' needs. Furthermore, Susanne has always been enthusiastic about K-12 initiatives. She would like to target opportunities that would enhance K-12 outreach as the Chair of LAD EXCOM. With the help of Matthew Kawczynski (Secretary), Nicole Baer (Vice-Chair), Jennifer Zabik (Past Chair), and the ASCE staff, Susanne is looking forward to another successful year!

The 2019-2020 fiscal year starts with the LLC with an exciting Leadership Facilitation Skills Bootcamp that will introduce the best practices and tools to support effective project and meeting facilitation. Also, the SEI Standard Lecture for SEI Chapters has been approved again for this upcoming fiscal year! All SEI chapters that were not awarded the lecture series last year are encouraged to apply for the 4 SEI lectures to be held in January-September 2020.
