Steven G. Hakes, P.E., M.ASCE

2020–2023 Region 7 Governor

Vision Statement

As a candidate for Region 7 Governor, I will strive to improve the ASCE experience for members. I intend to strengthen the sense of community among the chapters and branches in Region 7. I will address the issues that chapters, branches, and members struggle with to improve the experience and provide the expected value of ASCE. I will work to make sure ASCE provides unique opportunities to grow and develop technically, build our network, foster leadership abilities, and positively impact the community.

Engineers need to be aware of the outside impacts that are positively and negatively affecting our industry; public policy, funding, a changing workforce, and innovation. We must help members acknowledge these issues and become advocates for change. We are being asked to do more for our communities with shrinking resources. Innovation and sustainability in design are critical in bridging that gap and we must foster a community of sharing so we can learn from each other's successes and failures. I will serve Region 7 to hear every engineer's voice and utilize ASCE's resources to provide the support we need to more effectively fulfill our responsibilities to the communities and world we live in.
