Tariq U. Saeed, Hugh W. and Edna M. Donnan Doctoral Candidate of Transportation & Infrastructure Systems Engineering at Purdue University's Lyles School of Civil Engineering, is the 2018 winner of the Jack E. Leisch Fellowship Award. Tariq's research interests and experience during the doctoral program are spanned over a spectrum of areas ranging from highway geometric design, and safety analysis to travel behavior modeling, transportation financing, and highway infrastructure design and management in the era of connected and autonomous transportation.

Tariq's current research examines how the deployment of connected and autonomous vehicles on roadways will influence the geometric design and management of highway infrastructure, agency expenditures, and revenue. His recent work in transportation planning includes the development of five road classes for the local roads in the United States. In highway safety research, he applies advanced statistical and econometric methods to gain important new insights for improving the state of safety on rural and urban roads. He has already published an impressive number of journal articles many of which are in well‐reputed journals including the Journal of Transportation Engineering, the Journal of Infrastructure Systems and Analytic Methods in Accident Research.

Tariq has also been the recipient of several competitive and prestigious fellowships in the past, including those from International Road Federation, Eno Center for Transportation, American Public Transportation Foundation and the Office of Science, Technology, and Higher Education of the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington D.C. to attend Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland.

The ASCE Transportation and Development Institute is pleased to congratulate Tariq on winning this prestigious fellowship.

The  Jack E. Leisch Fellowship is a memorial to the outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions of Jack E. Leisch, M. ASCE, to the fields of geometric design, traffic engineering, and transportation planning. The fellowship is supported by the income from donations in Mr. Leisch's honor.
