Henry H. Bardakjian, P.E., M. ASCE is the recipient of the 2016 ASCE
Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award
for his significant contributions and work to advance the field of pipelines engineering. Established by the ASCE Board of Direction in 1970, the Bechtel Award recognizes outstanding achievements in pipelines engineering and is given annually to an ASCE member who has made significant contribution to the advancement of pipeline engineering in research, planning, design, or construction.
In the field of research and development, Mr. Bardakjian represented his company,
, on the
American Concrete Pressure Pipe Association (ACPPA)
Technical Committee to evaluate and develop new design criteria for Pre-stressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe; an effort that culminated in
AWWA Standard C304, Design of Pre-stressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe
. This standard is considered one of the most complex documents ever undertaken by AWWA. As the chief engineer for Ameron (from 1982 until 2008), Henry played a key role in the development of this standard.
Mr. Bardakjian also developed and managed many concrete and steel pipe design and performance related test programs which included tests on 144-inch diameter composite steel-and-concrete tunnel liner designed for external heads up to 1200 feet to verify the composite wall action, load/deflection tests for steel pipe to establish the pipe deflection limits; tests for 144-inch-diameter reinforced concrete cylinder pipe for a high profile project in Nevada to verify the new M9 design procedure; and a thrust restraint test program in 1988 which was instrumental in developing the new M9 thrust restraint procedure.
Henry serves on the
AWWA Concrete Pressure Pipe Standards Committee
, is a member of all their Sub‐Committees, and chairs the AWWA C300 Sub-Committee on Reinforced Concrete Cylinder Pipe. He is also a member of the AWWA Steel Pipe Committee and serves on their Steel Water Pipe Technical Advisory Committee (SWPMTAC), where he chairs the C205 Committee for Cement Mortar Protective Coating and Lining. Mr. Bardakjian is also active on the Steel Pipe Committee for the Steel Tank Institute/Steel Plate Fabricator's Association (STI/SPFA) and is a life-long member of the
American Concrete Institute (ACI)
National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE)
Mr. Bardakjian was presented with the Bechtel Award at the Pipelines Awards Luncheon, during the Pipelines Conference on July 19 in Kansas City, Missouri. Henry was accompanied by his wife, Seta.
Henry reflected on receiving the award:
"I am humbled and honored for receiving the 2016 Bechtel Pipelines Engineering Award. I am very grateful and ecstatic that my contributions to the pipeline industry were recognized. I am gratified that all my peers, colleagues, and friends at the conference were also very happy to see me receive the award.
I would like to recognize Del Hausmann who was my mentor and boss until 1990; we kept exchanging our thoughts until his passing a year ago. I would also like to acknowledge some of my peers and colleagues, who over the years, supported me to achieve my goals. They include Dr. Mehdi Zarghamee, Chris Sundberg, Roy Oda, Mike Murphy, Ron Bassoni and Joel Olmos. And I would also like to thank my wife, Seta, and my family for their love and support."
Following the luncheon, Mr. Bardakjian presented the Bechtel Lecture on special projects he has been involved in, which included the 144-inch Diameter RCCP 600 MGD Bay Aqueduct at Lake Mead's Boulder Harbor.
