As the second UESI Board of Governors President, it is my great pleasure to welcome all UESI members and thank you for your support of UESI. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank UESI past-President Randy Hill and past-governors David Garber and Kristina Swallow for their leadership and service.

This is the inaugural UESI Institute Newsletter. It is the first of many to come!  It is our expectation that the UESI eNewsletter will be developed quarterly. Time will tell and your feedback will be well received and valued be it content, technical interest, and recommendations on how we can all make UESI a better Institute for all members and professionals.

Each publication, we will strive to communicate to you some information about our operational and administrative commitments to ASCE. Also, we will provide information and summary updates relative to what is going on in our active Divisions. If you have any areas of interest or something you would like to be addressed, please let me know.

This is certainly exciting times! We have many challenges to overcome to make UESI a well-established organization, offer opportunities for participation, to be prosperous and fulfill the technical and professional needs of our members. The biggest challenge now is to build on our MEMBERSHIP! We have needs and milestones for full members, Institute-Only members and Organizational Members! Please consider joining one of the dynamic UESI technical committees and provide your expertise and advance your career!

UESI recently released our annual report (FY 2016). The purpose of the annual report is to present to the UESI membership a summary of the Institute's activities and progress during the period of October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016 (FY 2016), as specified by the UESI Bylaws. If you have an interest, it's for some good reading!

The makeup of the Institute includes 6 divisions of technical areas of interest. For the first 3-5 years, the UESI Vision was to organize and operate 3 divisions including: Pipelines, Utility Risk, and Surveying & Geomatics. In due time, we expected active divisions for Asset Management, Construction Management, and Standards.

It's not quite working like the plan envisioned. It's actually better! A few months ago the Standards Division was established and leadership roles assigned and ready to meet its objectives for 2017. The Board of Governors recently approved the Utility Infrastructure Asset Management Division with a full complement of Executive Committee members. The Utility Risk Management Division is making great progress forming Technical Committees to mitigating risk. The Pipeline Division is working on the next great technical conference for 2017 in Phoenix, AZ and getting Manuals of Practice are ready for publication. The Surveying and Geomatics Division is getting re-organized, completing an updated Surveying Manual, and will have a Specialty Conference in 2018.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the working committees, and the staff of ASCE, THANK YOU for your passionate commitment, your generous support, and all that you do for our profession and leading UESI to new heights of excellence.

Sincerely,

Joe Castronovo, P.E., F.ASCE
UESI President
