The UESI Miami-Dade Chapter under the Miami-Dade Branch of ASCE hosted a site tour of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) South District Wastewater Treatment Plant (SDWWTP) on June 5th, 2021. As the branch's first in person event since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour had 12 registrants attend including multiple engineering interns and entry-level engineers. The site tour was hosted by the AECOM and Gannett Fleming PM/CM Team who actively manage construction projects under the Miami-Dade Consent Decree program. During the event, attendees learned about how SDWWTP treats 112.5 MGD of sewage per day and the ongoing construction projects at the facility under the Consent Decree and Ocean Outfall Legislation (OOL) programs which will expand the permitted capacity of the plant to 130 MGD. Attendees also took in the sights (and smells) of the facility including the grit chamber, air scrubbers, and clarifiers which were undergoing improvements at the time of the site visit. Carlos Tijerino (Miami-Dade Branch ASCE president) and Nick Karpathy, E.I., ENV SP (UESI Miami-Dade Chapter Chair) found some new 36" diameter pipes with fittings during the tour and used the opportunity to teach the group about different type of pipe connections.
