Laptop with program open on it showing truck driving over bridge

ASCE Bridge Designer

ASCE Bridge Designer, Cloud Edition is the newest version of a free, open source application available since 2002. Millions have used it to learn basics of engineering design. Along with other improvements, this version makes Bridge Designer more accessible. Only a web browser and computer with a mouse-like pointer are needed. No software to install. Chromebooks work well.

Each user of Bridge Designer solves the problem of designing and testing a highway bridge. For the test, a simulated truck load drives over the bridge to ensure it's strong enough.

But that's not all! The most successful bridge is the one with lowest cost. ASCE Bridge Designer continuously shows the cost of the current design based on the amount of earth to be moved at the bridge site, the design's complexity, and the kind and amount of materials used. Iterate to see how low you can get the cost of your bridge! Compete to see whose is best!

All versions are distributed freely under provisions of the GNU General Public License V3.

Make a suggestion or report an issue

The team needs your help to keep ASCE Bridge Designer working well.

Option 1

  • If you're a Github user or don't mind creating an account there, please consider creating an issue for the project instead of emailing. Include enough information to reproduce the problem on our end. Attach bridge design files if helpful. This helps us out.

Option 2

Send us an email:

  • Bug reports. If the app does something unexpected or annoying, please email a bug report. Include enough information to reproduce the problem on our end. Attach bridge design files if helpful.
  • Feature requests. If you have an idea that many users of Bridge Designer would find useful, please explain it to us in email.

Thanks from the authors

The project team is deeply grateful to the ASCE for their generosity in hosting the Bridge Designer.
