Taher M. Abu-Lebdeh, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, a professor of civil engineering and chair of research and development for the NNSA/MSIPP Consortium, has been named a fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Abu-Lebdeh is an associate editor for the American Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He has been teaching civil engineering courses for more than 28 years.

His research interests include structural mechanics, materials characterization, and constitutive modeling of material behavior. His work and research involvement have resulted in over $9.8 million of funding for scientific research, educational research, and student mentoring funding, and he has received three “outstanding teacher of the year” awards.

He has served, or is currently serving, as the major advisor for 28 master’s students and has supervised over 25 undergraduate researchers. He has also served on 35 master’s thesis and five doctoral committees.

Abu-Ledbeh has arranged for summer students’ internships at government agencies and other civil engineering companies. He provides mentoring for his students in outside-classroom and service learning activities. Beyond his traditional faculty role, he has worked with over 50 ASCE student chapter volunteers who participated in student engagement initiatives, such as community service and volunteerism (Housing for Greensboro, Habitat for Humanity).

He has authored/co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed journal papers and 25 conference proceedings. Additionally, he has served as session chair at several engineering conferences and presented his research work at more than 20 conferences and 30 other professional meetings.

Abu-Lebdeh has been serving as the faculty advisor for the ASCE student chapter at NCA&T State University since 2008 and has participated in 13 ASCE Carolina conferences. He is the point-of-contact for civil engineering companies and for ASCE Student Services arranging for jobs and ASCE opportunities for students.

He holds a doctoral degree in civil engineering, structures from Louisiana State University.
