ASCE has honored Xihaier Luo, Ph.D., Aff.M.ASCE, and Ahsan Kareem, Ph.D., F.EMI, NAE, Dist.M.ASCE, with the 2022 J. James R. Croes Medal for the paper “Dynamic Mode Decomposition of Random Pressure Fields over Bluff Bodies,” Journal of Engineering Mechanics, April 2021.
The contribution of this paper is threefold: 1) it offers a comparison of DMD and POD and highlights the advanced features of DMD using pressure field data around a building; 2) the conventional DMD approach was enhanced by embedding experimental data in high-order space, which enhances the ability of DMD to unfold underlying dynamics in a more identifiable form; and 3) based on an unsupervised machine learning approach, similar DMD modes were clustered in groups. It was noted that at different scales associated with these clusters, the DMD modes can capture the evolution of aerodynamic features like the convection of vortices and other energetic structures responsible for the damage. The distribution among broad scales of pressure fluctuations reflects an energy cascade akin to turbulence.
The J. James R. Croes Medal is presented to the author or authors of a paper that is judged worthy of the award and to be next in order of merit to the paper to which the Norman Medal is awarded.
