ASCE has honored Andronikos Skiadopoulos, Ph.D., Aff.M.ASCE; Ahmed Elkady; and Dimitrios G. Lignos, Ph.D., M.ASCE, with the 2022 Raymond C. Reese Research Prize for the paper “Proposed Panel Zone Model for Seismic Design of Steel Moment-Resisting Frames,” Journal of Structural Engineering, April 2021.

The authors propose a new mechanics-based model for seismic design and analysis of beam-to-column panel zone joints as part of steel moment resisting frames (MRFs), an innovation that will be a great asset to the structural engineering profession. This paper serves as a vital resource for prospective design, retrofit, and risk mitigation in existing structures, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of the Research Prize. The model presented in the paper is accessible yet elegant, allowing the structural engineer to engage with the model in an enticing, practical manner. Papers of this caliber, with the dedication to scientific rigor, accuracy, simplicity, practically, presentability, and longevity, are far and few between.

The Raymond C. Reese Research Prize is awarded to the author or authors of a paper that describes a notable achievement in research related to structural engineering.
