ASCE has honored Ning Lu, Ph.D., F.EMI, F.ASCE, with the 2023 Karl Terzaghi Award for seminal contributions to the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing the behavior of unsaturated soils and their implications in slope stability and other geotechnical problems.

Lu’s contributions have implications for a wide range of geotechnical engineering applications. He has advanced unsaturated soil mechanics through development of innovative laboratory and field measurement approaches, detailed field studies, and development of theoretical frameworks such as the suction stress characteristic curve. These contributions have advanced the profession’s capabilities for expansive soils, rainfall-induced landslides, and fluid flow and heat transfer problems, and provide a basis for further advances across an even broader range of unsaturated soil mechanics problems.

Lu is an inspiring lecturer, teacher, and ambassador for the discipline.

The Karl Terzaghi Award is presented for outstanding contributions to knowledge in the fields of soil mechanics, subsurface and earthwork engineering, and subsurface and earthwork construction.
