ASCE has honored Bryant A. Robbins, P.E., M.ASCE, with the 2023 Arthur Casagrande Professional Development Award for pioneering research relating theoretical, experimental, and numerical aspects of soil erosion in dams and levees leading to significant advances in the state of the art for research and practice.

Robbins’ research on internal erosion in dams and levees constitutes a significant contribution. Through work at the USACE's Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC) and Risk Management Center (ERC), he has contributed to risk assessments for a range of major dam projects, fostered research collaborations with universities, and contributed to improved technical practices. In parallel with his profession roles, his recent doctoral research has advanced numerical modeling methods for evaluating internal erosion and backward erosion piping processes in water-retaining dams and levees. Overall, this award recognizes Robbins for his exceptional talents and outstanding contributions as both a young researcher and practitioner.

The Arthur Casagrande Professional Development Award is presented in recognition of outstanding accomplishments as evidenced by completed works, reports, or papers in the field of geotechnical engineering. The award was established to provide professional development opportunities for outstanding young practitioners, researchers, and teachers of geotechnical engineering.
