ASCE has honored Mario Ricozzi, P.E., ENV SP, F.ASCE, with the 2024 ASCE Presidents-Emeriti Council Award for exemplary, unwavering, calm, savvy, friendly, and efficient dedication to the ASCE Board of Direction on governing documents and many other contributions.
Ricozzi is a collaborative leader with experience in the public, private, and professional not-for profit arenas. Management experiences include oversight of capital programs; leadership of water, wastewater, and solid waste utilities; board leadership; organizational governance; professional code of ethics development; strategic planning; organizational efficiency reviews; legislative affairs; as well as the re-imagination and implementation of restructuring board governance and government services.
Professional credentials include a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Licensed Professional Engineer in Connecticut, and Envision Sustainability Professional.
Since 2007, Ricozzi has served as the manager of design for the Greater New Haven Water Pollution Control Authority, (GNHWPCA), overseeing the Capital Program for Reduction of Combined Sewer Overflows and Infrastructure Improvements on facilities that date to the 1860s. GNHWPCA is a regional wastewater utility along Connecticut’s shoreline, serving 200,000 customers and operating one of the largest water pollution abatement facilities in Connecticut. The $700 million dollar program is a combination of natural and engineered solutions with individual project values from $60,000 to $100 million.
Overseeing the program requires the management of consulting engineering firms, technical reviews, and collaboration with public officials, neighborhood groups, and regulators. The challenge is in determining the optimum program planning and scheduling to provide the highest value for utility customers by leveling the debt service repayment costs and maximizing funding opportunities through Connecticut’s Clean Water Fund Program and other funding opportunities.
The ASCE Presidents-Emeriti Council Award recognizes distinguished service advancing civil engineering as well as protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public at large.
