
Gregs G. Thomopulos, P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, chairman emeritus of Stanley Consultants, has been honored with election by ASCE for its class of 2025 distinguished members. He is recognized for eminence in domestic and international civil engineering, demonstrating tireless advocacy for quality, sustainability, integrity, and ethics in global infrastructure and for elevating the stature of consulting engineering worldwide.
Thomopulos served with Stanley, an ENR Top 100 firm, for 51 years beginning as an engineering intern and rising to the positions of president, CEO, and chair of the board. He is an international icon in an industry for which he championed a focus on excellence and ethical practices, bringing him recognition many times over.
His global reach has included engineering projects in more than 35 countries. His firm has executed projects in over 100 countries and achieved numerous milestones, among them sustainably expanding rural electricity in the Philippines, surface water treatment in Jordan, and wastewater treatment in Egypt and Yemen. Stanley also played a crucial role in the reconstruction efforts in Kuwait and Iraq after the Gulf wars and designed a state-of-the-art analytical laboratory for the destruction of chemical weapons in Russia.
Thomopulos’ dedication to improving infrastructure and quality of life globally is highlighted by the aforementioned projects. His leadership and vision have not only driven the success of Stanley Consultants, but have also set a benchmark for the industry. Under his leadership, the company’s revenue more than doubled from under $100 million to over $200 million annually.
His contributions have been recognized by numerous organizations, and he has served on several nonprofit and for-profit boards, including the University of Iowa College of Engineering Advisory Board, the University of Iowa Foundation Board, Kansas University School of Engineering Advisory Board and the KU Endowment Association. It was Thomopulos’ leadership and his belief in what it means to be a member of the world community that led many Stanley Consultants engineers to volunteer for assignment in Baghdad, Iraq to rebuild the country during the Second Gulf War. One of the proudest moments of his career was spending Christmas with Stanley staff in Baghdad.
Thomopulos was president of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers from 2009 to 2011 and was chairman of American Council of Engineering Companies in 2013. He is a registered professional engineer in seven states and Puerto Rico.
In 2004, Thomopulos was featured on the cover of Engineering News-Record as a 21st Century World Citizen. In 2011, he received ASCE’s OPAL leadership award in management. He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2022.
