It’s an engineer’s market right now.
This decade’s well-established civil engineering workforce crunch has meant a large array of available jobs for students entering the field and other engineers seeking their next opportunity. We knew that.
And now the ASCE 2025 Civil Engineering Salary Report, released today, confirms that the salaries civil engineers are earning in those jobs continue to rise.
The report notes that the average base salary is up to $148,000.
That’s $9,000 higher than the 2024 report’s findings and a whopping $25,000 up on the 2022 salary report’s median of $123,000.
“It’s critically important, because it recognizes that engineers have great value,” said ASCE President Marsha Anderson Bomar, Ph.D., AICP, ENV SP, F.ITE, F.ASCE. “It also makes our industry more competitive, so that people who might be on the fence about how they want to steer their careers see that this profession allows them to earn a proper living and do the engineering work that they love to do.
“We have to keep monitoring it and making sure the salaries that are paid represent the value civil engineers bring to our world.”
The ASCE Salary Report is compiled each year from a survey of members regarding their salaries and job benefits. This year’s report is derived from survey responses by 2,415 Society members.
The report provides an excellent snapshot of the current industry compensation models, while the annual nature of the ASCE project gives a great way of analyzing year-over-year trends.
For instance, the 2024 report indicated a slight downtick in civil engineering job satisfaction. This year, though, those numbers rebounded with 86.2% of respondents saying they were satisfied with their jobs.
The report also showed that entry-level salaries continued to rise, up to $77,100.
“Pursuing a degree and career in civil engineering is one of the best choices a student can make right now,” Anderson Bomar said. “The work to design and build infrastructure systems we rely on for public health, safety, and welfare is rewarding, and employers are rewarding the important work civil engineers do to improve communities.
“It is crucial everyone in the profession works to recruit, grow, and retain the next generation of civil engineers to ensure we have successful infrastructure systems.”
