Somehow, in some quarters, there remains an ill-reasoned notion that civil engineering is a task-based undertaking.

Actual civil engineers doing the actual civil engineering – certainly the most forward-thinking civil engineers – know that theirs is a profession rooted in big-picture thinking.

Civil engineers inherently consider their plans, design, and projects within the context of community and impact on society.

Every day is a big-picture day, especially given the needs of a rapidly changing world and the future of infrastructure.

"The challenges that we have today are requiring us to think bigger, and be even more creative," said Jared Green, member of the ASCE Board of Direction and principal and vice president at Langan in Philadelphia.

The inaugural ASCE2027: The Infrastructure and Engineering Experience, March 1-5 in Philadelphia, is loaded with big ideas. The entire event is built to convene big thinkers from across infrastructure sectors.

So what's your big civil engineering idea?
