MacGillivray Freeman FilmsEven as Cities of the Future continues to show on giant screens across the world, ASCE is offering a special chance to bring it to a small screen near you.
The new Cities of the Future Library Screening program gives libraries an exclusive one-time opportunity to screen the film in celebration of Earth Day 2026.
Simply bring the idea to your local library, have the library submit a registration form, and plan your Cities of the Future event.
“Cities of the Future brings complex engineering concepts to life by showing how today’s engineers are developing real solutions to the challenges facing our cities, with the goal of creating more sustainable communities that benefit us all,” said the film’s director, Greg MacGillivray of MacGillivray Freeman Films, who produced the film along with ASCE.
MacGillivray also directed Dream Big: Engineering Our World, ASCE’s first foray into giant-screen outreach and a huge success since its 2017 release.
Cities of the Future follows the work of a middle-school Future City Competition team, showcasing some of the world’s most innovative infrastructure and several superstar civil engineers and ASCE members.
The library screenings require a $5 service fee to receive a Vimeo streaming link. The link is accompanied by a free educator guide filled with hands-on activities related to the film.
Earth Day this year is Wednesday, April 22. One-time screenings may be scheduled through Sunday, April 26.
“The film is an outstanding resource for libraries, sparking curiosity and helping students and family audiences understand the positive role engineering plays in everyday life,” MacGillivray said. “My hope is that when young people see these brilliant engineers working to make the world a better place, they’ll be inspired to imagine themselves becoming engineers one day.”
