Jerald (Jerry) Schnoor, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, emeritus professor in the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Iowa, has been named a fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Schnoor’s research interests include phytoremediation, environmental modeling, water sustainability, and climate change. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, elected in 1999 for “research and engineering leadership in development, validation, and utilization of mathematical models for global environmental decision-making.” He has served as editor-in-chief of Environmental Science & Technology (2003-14), and as the founding editor-in-chief of ES&T Letters (2012-14).
He received the Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize for his work on water sustainability in 2010, the Dixie Lee Ray Award for environmental protection in 2016, and the Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology Award from the American Chemical Society in 2019.
Schnoor graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State University, and both a master’s degree in environmental health engineering and a doctoral degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Iowa.
